Dirty Blonde

Dirty Blonde

I had a look at Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love while browsing through a book shop a while ago. She has an interesting story and I like the personal journal presentation. Here’s an interview

I’ve been a fan of his music and humour for some time and recently found an old copy of his book: Short Back and Sides at the local library. It features his writing, songs and life story - great inspiration.

Oryx and Crake

Oryx and Crake

I read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood some years ago - a fascinating contemporary novel.

The Year of the Hare

The Year of the Hare

The Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna is a thoroughly Finnish novella. A road accident with a wild hare marks a turning point in the protagonist’s life. He follows his instincts to spontaneously pursue a personal quest for freedom with the hare in his care. The story takes us on an adventure through Finland. For the foreign reader this is an exciting cultural tour, a fascinating insight into Finnish character and way of life. A classic throughout much of Europe this recent English translation is a fun and entertaining read.

Saskia Olde Wolbers

I first saw her work at Beck’s Futures when she won back in 2004. One of the perks of my job at the time was that I knew that she was going to win before she did. We went to the opening/ award presentation but it was not very glamorous. Bob Geldorf and Yoko Ono presented and they were cool and honest about art and life. I feel so pathetic name-dropping like this but I’m doing it anyway. On the tube on the way there my colleague joked that we should go via the betting office and cash in on our inside knowledge. He had a great sense of humour. We ended up drinking too much beer (pretentious free Becks was obviously in abundance and it all tastes the same anyway). I still managed to fall in love with her work. Almost as good sober, her work features unusual stories narrated over beautiful visuals. I’m particularly interested in the narratives and would love to see more of her work.

I recently read this incredible book. Ian McEwan has been one of my favourite writers for some time. He’s really in top form with his latest book. I could say more but I’d rather just say: “Read it!”

A beautiful late performance by Elvis.
