The Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna is a thoroughly Finnish novella. A road accident with a wild hare marks a turning point in the protagonist’s life. He follows his instincts to spontaneously pursue a personal quest for freedom with the hare in his care. The story takes us on an adventure through Finland. For the foreign reader this is an exciting cultural tour, a fascinating insight into Finnish character and way of life. A classic throughout much of Europe this recent English translation is a fun and entertaining read.
